(COSTUMES, VISUALS)
directed by Konrad Imiela music by Kuba Suchar, Jerzy Szaniawski Dramatic Theatre in Wałbrzych (2024)
Brecht’s drama about Galileo confronted with power becomes, in this production, a story whose urgency resonates with contemporary crises – from climate collapse to the pandemic – while revealing the private cost of genius.
In designing the costumes, my aim was to create a world that does not imitate historical accuracy but transforms it. I combined contemporary fabrics with Renaissance silhouettes so that the characters move between eras – as if history and the present were layered on top of each other. Galileo, dressed in modern clothing, becomes someone who fits into no order at all, because his thinking exceeds the limits of his time. Instead of naturalism, I use signs, contrasts, and deliberate shifts.
Together with Piotr Bartos, I co-created projections that used a circular surface on the horizon as a screen for enlarged images of celestial bodies and genre scenes. The screen functioned like Galileo’s telescope – expanding the boundaries of what can be known.
The production received the Special Stanisław Hebanowski Award as part of the 10th edition of the “Living Classics” competition.
